FEMINA POTENS VISUAL ART OPENING RECEPTION: TWISTED ELEMENTS
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 14, 2008 - Femina Potens presents “Twisted Elements”, featuring sculptors Joni Younkins-Herzog and Susan Latta. Both artists are drawn to the elements of nature and the interference of man into”natural” processes. Witness the absurdity of natural selection, fantastical creatures and objects that result when science meets flesh, when genetic engineering meets iconically sexualized feminine forms. Such as Herzog’s bio engineered sculptures of spider creatures composed of bronzed Barbie doll like thighs. And Latta’s steel sculptures embedded into flesh like materials. Femina Potens proudly invites you to question the absurd. Join us for the “Twisted Elements” opening reception August 2, 2008 at 7pm.
Joni Younkins-Hezog’s art work lures viewers closer with luscious materials, and sensual forms, inviting them to take a closer look. She morphs unlikely material sources, combining beauty with absurdity and a desire for the fantastic. Her intentions are to evoke an emotional response and emphasize a prevailing disconnect between the mind and body. The combination of beauty, horror and absurdity in her pieces initially diffuses the underlying anxiety within the ideas surrounding feminism and female sexual empowerment. Younkins-Herzog has an interest in cultivating a more positive attitude towards the sexuality of women and identifying with feminine qualities found in both genders. She finished her MFA at Indiana University, and now teaches at Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma. www.joniyounkinsherzog.com
Sue Latta of Idaho is a sculptor who works primarily with metals and resins. The work has a raw, seductive and industrial quality. Her metal like sculptures accompanied side by side with soft vulnerable flesh like materials cultivates an emotional reaction that represents Latta’s memory of trauma, pain, fear and horror. The art work is repellent and beautiful at the same time creating a relationship between attraction and repulsion. Latta’s creative process is the evolution of concept partnered with the natural and intimate character of the material. This intricate relationship is the essence of each Latta sculpture. www.steelsue.com
“Twisted Elements” runs August 2, 2008 through August 31, 2008.
