Hello!
My name is Stacey McLaren and I am the Program Supervisor for the EMQ Mentor Program. We are associated with the private non-profit organization EMQ Children and Family Services. To provide a little information about the agency, EMQ Children & Family Services is nationally recognized for innovation in family-centered programs that help children recover from issues such as severe depression, thoughts of suicide, or drug abuse-and keep families together. The private nonprofit annually helps almost 7,000 children and their family members every year through programs like Family Finding, Wraparound, support and educational services. Our Mission: At EMQ Children & Family Services our mission is to work with children and their families to transform their lives, build emotional, social and familial well-being, and to transform the systems that serve them. Our Philosophy: EMQ believes the most effective form of care for children, youth and their families is based in the community, using strengths and needs to define and individualize service. We believe children and families should have the greatest possible access to services, as well as maximum voice and choice in planning, carrying out and evaluating those services.
The reason I am writing to you is that you were provided as an organization for me to connect with to determine if there is a way to see if any members are interested in becoming volunteer mentors for the children and youth we serve at our agency. In terms of the Mentor Program specifically; we are in search of volunteers from the community to become mentors for the children and youth that are served at the agency. These children are in need of positive support people that are able to provide 1:1 support and friendship. As a mentor the volunteers would be paired with a child, which they would be able to select based on similar interests. The two of them would be able to spend time together, usually in the community doing various activities. The time they spend with the child is a time that allows them to have some fun and spend time with someone who is there just for them. Requirements/Qualifications: We seek a one year commitment from the volunteers, which averages to be about two hours per week or four hours every other week, spending time with the child or youth out in the community. The program provides six hours of training at the beginning of the service period and offer monthly Support Groups to the mentors as well. The other requirements are to be age 21 and over. Included in the process is also a group orientation, personal interview, background screening, three personal references, DMV print out, copy of driver’s license, and copy of auto insurance.
Please let me know if this is something that can be made available as a volunteer option to the members. I can provide any other information you need or answer any questions. I look forward to determining the options available for us to connect. Thank you in advance for your support and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Take care,
Stacey
