It’s fun, it’s cheap and you’re invited! The class begins on Tuesday Jan. 20th. We dance from 7 to 9 pm at the First Congregational Church, 1229 Court Street in Martinez.
Gay and lesbian square dancing is not the American folk-dancing you might have learned and remember from grade school. It is more upbeat, energetic and a lot of fun to learn. We offer square dancing opportunities for everyone, from the absolute beginner to those more advanced. All you really need is a sense of fun and a desire to meet and interact with new people! Traditional square dance attire is not required, if it’s street legal, you can dance in it and you are likely to dance to a wide variety of music. Also, you don’t have to bring a partner - there are always people you can find to dance with. And we just don’t stop with square dancing - we also plan other social events such as potlucks, pool parties and movie nights.
The new beginner class will be a commitment of about 30 weeks to reach the Plus level of square dancing. Cost for the entire class is $140, which includes instruction, space rental and class materials. Students can also pay three installments of $50 each. No prior dance experience or special talent is required - it’s relatively easy and lots of fun.
In addition to classes, we offer club nights and most clubs host square dances. Club nights are informal dances open to all members of the club and visitors for an evening of dancing. More structured square dances are events where other clubs and visitors are encouraged to attend, making for a regional dance experience. A typical square dance brings in a guest square dance caller (the person that “calls” or announces the square dance steps) and some 50 to 100 dancers (6 to 12 “squares”) for an evening of dancing at a variety of dance levels. Our dances give you a chance to show off dancing skills you learned during class, and also provide an opportunity to socialize with square dancers from other clubs.

A group of us who will be mostly, if not all, over 40 year old Lesbians are meeting at Rancho Laguna park at the end of Camino Pablo Rd. in Orinda at 1PM on Monday to hike by the Upper San Leandro Reservoir. I have a permit for the EBMUD land. This is fairly unpopulated area, and is a good place to see herons, egrets, other water birds, and, if we’re lucky –coyotes, bobcats, etc. You can reach the park off Pinehurst from Redwood Road in Oakland, or from Hwy 24 in Orinda. Bring binoculars. The trail is fairly level and we will be stopping to look for wildlife, so it won’t be too strenuous.
