Lesbian Widows Free Peer Support 1/25/09 4PM Palo Alto, CA

— admin @ 4:45 pm

Hi, As promised we will be starting the Lesbian Widows or Lesbians who have survived the death of their partner FREE peer meetings. We will meet on the Fourth Sunday of the Month for 6 months. (You don’t need to attend all the meetings, no committment required) I have reserved a room at the Stanford Cancer Center for the following Sundays, January 25 , February 22, March 22, April 26, May 24, June 28, 2009. The time would be 4PM to 5:30PM with an extra half hour for informal conversation with each other. Enter the Cancer Center, walk up grand stairs the rooms on on you right at the top of the stairs. Ask the guard to direct you to the elevator.
What to bring: facial tissues/kleenex, paper and pen, pictures, filled reusable water bottle - no food or water will be served. Perhaps people will want to go to dinner after meeting - nothing is cheap in Palo Alto. Dinner will cost about $15
I would love co-facilitators as I am also a Lesbian Widow and would like to actively participate.
Here is the Agenda: (This will provide us structure giving everyone an equal opportunity to participate.) 5 minutes to sit and settle - introduce yourself to someone new to you 5 minutes of silent or guided meditation Introductions - Name, name of who died & date of death, how they died, why you are here or what you hope to get today Reading of Ground Rules: Confidentiality, Only comment if someone asks for comments, share the floor with your sisters - no monopolizing air time 10 minute quick write Three Topics Letter to the Wife who died or a memory from your time with your partner or description of where you are with your grief today Sharing of written work or pass General Sharing and sharing of resources 5 minutes of silent or guided meditation 15 to 20 minutes clean up room, talk to someone individually, arrange to go to dinner or coffee
Location: Stanford Cancer Center - Building 1 on map - Free parking of Weekends all Stanford parking lots Directions and map URL: http://cancer.stanford.edu/directions/
I looked for somewhere closer to public transportation, but this is the best I could do given that people are coming from SF, Monterey, San Jose etc. Plus we want a free space, to get this we agreed not to serve food or beverages. Again in six months you can help move the group to somewhere else by showing up 6/28/09. (East Bay people, you have a group on Thursdays, we need something on our side of the bridge. You are welcome to come, but stop complaining about our CalTrains stations or lack of BART to Palo Alto. You are welcome to attend, but we don’t have great public transportation on the Pennisula. You can take BART to Milbrae and transfer to CalTrain. You can write to me and say I would like to carpool, if anyone else says they want to carpool. I will send you each their e- mail)
Using CalTrain EXIT Palo Alto CalTrain station to Stanford Cancer Center use the Free Shuttle URL: http://transportation.stanford.edu/marguerite/MargueriteShuttle.shtml Take the Marguerite Shopping Express Shuttle departing the Palo Alto Transit Station at 3:35pm (next shuttle is 4:05pm) (CalTrain & VTAare both at this Palo Alto Station) exit the second stop Stanford Hospital walk to Stanford Cancer Center (ask the driver to point you across the parking lots - not to the main hospital They all know the cancer center)
You may just show up or you can write to me kim_mori@… . (Don’t whine to me about the location, time or date)
At the 6/28/09 meeting, whoever shows up will get to help determine the future of the group. (I am trying to get KARA to provide this service for our community. Not that we can’t do it ourselves, but Lesbian Widows deserve an on-going group on the Pennisula or in SF. KARA is an expert on grief and grieving, they should provide services for us just as they provide services for grieving men, parents, siblings, and others.)
For Dinner, I recommend Playa Grill or Max’s Opera Cafe at Stanford Shopping Center. The Stanford Shopping Center is on the shuttle route. Stanford Shopping Center URL: http://www.stanfordshop.com/Dining.aspx
Everyone grieves differently. Sometimes you need to hide out, and sometimes you need to take the risk, and share your experiences with your sisters. You may attend only sharing your name and crying without talking for the entire meeting. You may attend and bring books or other resources that have helped you. You might be able to attend one month and the next month not be able to handle being around other people. This is all part of grief. Be your own guide
