Prop 8 Supreme Court Vigil March 4th

— admin @ 5:30 pm

Equality Action NOW Announces, “March Forth on March 4th” Vigil

Sacramento, CA - February 27, 2009 - EqualityActionNOW.org the Sacramento based civil rights organization is joining with Marriage Equality USA and Join the Impact to host “March Forth on March 4th” Vigil the evening of March 4th, 2009 on the West Steps of the California State Capitol Building beginning at 5:00 p.m. At 6:00 P.M. participants will march from the Capitol Building to the California Supreme Court Building (914 Capitol Mall) for a short program and open mike where everyone will have a chance to express their reasons why Prop 8 should be overturned.

This event will call attention to the fact that the California Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on Thursday, March 5, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p..m., in three cases challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8, a statewide ballot initiative that was passed by a majority of California voters in November 2008.

The oral argument session will be held in the Supreme Court’s Courtroom, Earl Warren Center, Fourth Floor, 350 McAllister Street, San Francisco, as part of the court’s regular monthly calendar session in March 2009.

In the cases before the court, the court has issued an order listing the following three issues to be briefed and argued:

(1) Is Proposition 8 invalid because it constitutes a revision of, rather than an amendment to, the California Constitution?
(2) Does Proposition 8 violate the separation of powers doctrine under the California Constitution?
(3) If Proposition 8 is not unconstitutional, what is its effect, if any, on the marriages of same-sex couples performed before the adoption of Proposition 8?
The three cases before the court were filed directly in the California Supreme Court on November 5, 2008, the day following the voters’ approval of Proposition 8 at the November 4, 2008 election.

Equality Action NOW leadership and members believes the civil rights of all citizens of California is at risk and could open the flood-gates to future challenges, which is why they are inviting everyone, including other minorities, religious organizations, union members, and elected officials to join them to March Forth on March 4th and support the overturning of Prop 8.

Participants are asked to bring your signs and battery-powered candles or flashlights since burning candles are not allowed on the Capitol grounds. Organizers are asking people to gather at the West Steps of Capitol from 5-6 pm for a pre-march rally then step off at 6 pm and arrive at the California Supreme Court (914 Capitol Mall) at 6:30 pm for short program and open mike. This will not be a silent vigil - come let your voice be heard! - See you there.

Writing Class starts this Saturday

— admin @ 9:45 am

There are still openings in this class, taught by lesbian writer Elaine Beale. It starts this Saturday.
Busting Through Writer’s Block Five Saturdays, Feb. 28-March 28, 10:30 am-1 pm in Berkeley Offered through the Writing Salon $185 members/$215 non-members To register go to: http://www.writingsalons.com/ Instructor: Elaine Beale Call 510-532-1317 for more information
There are so many reasons that we may want to write but don’t. It’s hard to carve out the time. It’s challenging to make it a priority. It’s difficult to overcome all those inner voices that tell us we have nothing worthwhile to say. Or we may not believe we have the necessary skill or talent to justify spending our time writing. And sometimes it’s simply too scary to face that blank page alone.
Because writing is a solitary activity, it can feel especially difficult to overcome the blocks that prevent us from writing. Having an intensive period of support, encouragement and inspiration can help you bust through those blocks. It can help you develop a regular and productive writing practice.
This class will help you get (and keep) your creative juices flowing. In class, you’ll do inspiring exercises, learn techniques and engage in discussions. Between classes there’ll be assignments and prompts so you can keep up the momentum. The goal will be to help you create a solid foundation for your writing so that you will feel confident, inspired and eager to write more.
About the Instructor: Elaine Beale has taught creative writing for more than a decade. Her second novel, Another Life Altogether, is forthcoming from Spiegel & Grau, a division of Random House. In 2007 she was selected as the winner of the Poets and Writers California Writers Exchange Contest in fiction. She was also one of three finalists for the 2007 Penelope Niven Creation Nonfiction Award (Center for Women Writers, National Literary Awards). Elaine has a graduate degree in Education from the University of London (UK), and is a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing candidate at the University of British Columbia.
What Students say about Elaine’s classes:
Elaine’s is one of the most organized, inspiring and supportive writing teachers I’ve ever worked with. I would recommend her classes enthusiastically and without reservation. Tracy
Just a little note to tell you how much Carrie and I enjoyed Elaine’s “Busting through Writer’s Block” class on Saturday. She is excellent and the group was fantastic. Greg
I took two superb classes at Writing Salon this last term. One was a seminar on Writer’s Block with Elaine Beale. She was fantastic, giving great tangible ways to get around a block if not actually smash it. I wish she taught more classes in SF. I always tell everyone I know who’s even considering writing to head to you, to skip MFA programs etc. It’s all here at the Writing Salon. Margaret
Elaine, I’m thrilled and owe it all to your support and enthusiasm… Your class was transformational, and I continue to be grateful for your instruction, style and how you handled us with gentleness and generosity. You are a gifted teacher. Thanks again, Christie

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT Prop 8 CA Supreme Court Hearings- Please Forward!!

— admin @ 9:45 am

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ California Supreme Court hears oral arguments on validity of Prop 8 : How you can get involved!
On March 5th, the California Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case to repeal Proposition 8 and confirm that fundamental freedoms cannot be stripped from minorities by a popular vote. You can show your support for the repeal of Proposition 8 in three ways:
1. Get to San Francisco
Thousands of people are expected to come from all across the state to the California Supreme Court Building in San Francisco in the hopes of attending the oral argument to repeal Proposition 8 and confirm that fundamental freedoms cannot be stripped from minorities by a popular vote. Buses of students are being arranged from Southern California so that young people can witness this civil rights moment of their generation. They created this website for the event http://100000march.org
2. Help ensure that everyone can view the oral arguments
Unfortunately, there is very very limited seating in the courtroom and little overflow viewing. We will be gathering in front of the California Supreme Court in Civic Center Plaza. Only a few will be able to go inside — but with your help, the rest will be able to view the proceedings from outside. I’m hoping you will help Marriage Equality USA raise the funds we need to ensure that everyone can see and hear the historic oral arguments together on the Civic Center Plaza on an huge Jumbotron.
We need to raise $30,000 (for the Jumbotron and sound systems for the community candlelight vigil the night before and the day of the hearing). If we can do this, we will jointly create the most incredible historic community moment of the year!
All donations are tax deductible and will be used solely for getting the Jumbotron and sound system we need to provide our community the opportunity to watch and participate as history is made.
We only have a week - can you please forward this on to everyone you know and ask them to contribute. Gifts of $20.00, $10.00, and even $5.00 will help inch us closer to our goal. All donations are gratefully appreciated! http://www.firstgiving.com/supremecourtjumbotron
Please forward any questions to Molly McKay at (510) 332-0872
3. Eve of Justice Candlelight Vigils The night before the oral arguments, Marriage Equality USA is also helping to convene candlelight vigils across the state (in 20 cities and counting) in support of protecting the Constitutional Promise of Equality for All! To find a vigil near you go to www.eveofjustice.com or www.marriageequality.org
