From: GayMonterey@yahoogroups.com [mailto:GayMonterey@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Stephen Braveman, LMFT, DST Sent: Saturday, April 25, 2009 8:45 AM To: GAY MONTEREY eGROUP Subject: [GayMonterey] PLEASE CONFIRM INTENT TO ATTEND: Next upcoming meeting to bring a LGBTQQI Diversity Center to Monterey County! Importance: High

Hi Folks,

As you all know, Monterey County can be a pretty lonely place if you are a member of any one of the LGBTQQI communities. This is especially true for people who are new to the county, newly coming out to themselves and/or others and to teens finding themselves with few true peers and allies. It is also a challenge to those who are “straight” - whatever that means - and discover that their partner, their child, their parent, essentially any one close to them, is part of one of the “queer” communities.

You probably know that there, while few, resources in Monterey County available to the LGBTQQI communities. But where are they?? How does one get connected? Where can people find resources, support and a social network???

Well, the answer is a Diversity Center! Yes, a Diversity Center much like the one they have in Santa Cruz County. A safe place, well organized and well funded place that includes all the positives just mentioned and that is easily accessible.

While there has been much interest in a Monterey County Diversity Center in the past, those needed to come together to make it happen have not done so. Resources were not shared. A clear direction has not been set. Until NOW!

Last month we had our first “let’s start a Diversity Center in Monterey County” meeting. About 18 of us met at my office in Monterey and got a lot accomplished toward meeting our goal of seeing a Monterey County diversity Center, with two locations, one in Monterey and one in Salinas. We were supported by Jim Brown, the Santa Cruz Diversity Center ED, and many fine representatives from various queer communities here in our county.

We will be having our next meeting soon and you are invited! We encourage anyone interested in seeing a Monterey County Diversity Center become a reality to attend. All we ask is that you leave any old baggage about why efforts toward our goal did not work in the past and come with a fresh attitude, borrowing from our new national president, of YES WE CAN!

So……….

WHAT:
A meeting pulling various parts of the queer communities together to coordinate a push to make a Monterey County Diversity Center a Reality

WHEN: The next meeting is Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.(future meetings will likely be on the same schedule, the last Wednesday of each month, for now)

WHERE: The Quadrangle, 1000 south Main Street, Salinas, Room A&B (we are alternating between Salinas and Monterey each month)

RSVP (required): either stephen@bravemanthe rapy.com or (831) 375-7553

Here’s to a future Monterey County Diversity Center!

Namaste…Sat Nam…Om Shanti……Peace B’Ahava v’Shalom, u’Vrachot
