Board news, views and opportunities to help
Dear Christopher,
As President of the Board of Directors of the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center, I want to keep sharing with you news of our Center’s challenges and changes. Our April Board meeting continued the forward momentum we established in March: our new Board was officially installed, and new officers chosen. I am happy to continue to serve as Board President, and will be joined by Chris Flood as Vice President, Robert Willis as Treasurer, and Audrey Fernandez-Elliott as Secretary. We also announced the formation of committees that will help move our Center forward, and allow our Members to help guide our future direction. If you’re interested in serving on a committee or even just learning what it’s all about, plan to attend the first meeting of any of the committees next week. Our new committees are: * Fundraising/Marketing/Membership, co-chaired by Ray Mueller and Gui Alvarenga; the first meeting will be on Wednesday, May 13 at 7pm. * Finance, co-chaired by Robby Willis and Chris Flood; the first meeting will be Monday, May 11 at 4 pm. * Corporate Governance; co-chaired by Audrey Fernandez-Elliott and Michael Schlemmer; the first meeting will be on Monday, May 11 at 7 pm. * Building, co-chaired by Anne Hansen and Luis Sarmento; the first meeting will be on Tuesday, May 12 at 7 pm. All meetings will be held in the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center, 938 The Alameda, San Jose. Renewal: we didn’t fight this hard just to fade away!
The Center’s financial situation is still challenging. We need the help of all of our Members, friends, supporters, volunteers…anyone who is willing to donate and help ensure our survival. But we’re not asking for a handout: we’re asking you to join us in the renewal of the Billy DeFrank Center, so that it can continue to serve the LGBT community of Silicon Valley for years to come. And we’re making it as easy as possible to help! Center volunteers have created a wonderful brochure that you can circulate to your friends and to anyone you think might make a donation to save our Center — send an email to paul@defrank.org to get the PDF file or visit www.defrank.org next week to download it from our homepage (to save us on printing costs) and distribute. It explains who we are, where we’ve been, what’s happening now and what we’d like to see in the future - and it makes it very easy to donate by check or credit card. Please - if you can support us, I offer many thanks. But if you can ask your friends, co-workers and family to help - then together, we’ll save the DeFrank Center and create new ways to serve Silicon Valley’s LGBT Community tomorrow. If you’d like to host a house party or organize a fundraising event for the Center, please call our interim Executive Director Paul Wysocki at (408) 293-3040, extension 103. And don’t wait: our fiscal year ends on June 30, and our survival is at stake. I am convinced that we have a workable plan to stabilize, renew and reinvent our center, and with your help - and the help of many friends throughout our community - we can save our Center. After all…we didn’t fight this hard just to fade away! Anne Hansen, President Board of Directors Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center

Movie Night!

Soul Support Movie Night:  For the Bible Tells Me So
Date/Time:  May 11th, 7:00 p.m.
Location: Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center, 938 The Alameda, San Jose
Contact: Jo-Lynn at jolynnotto@yahoo.com, or 408-293-4080  ext. 117
RSVP’s  highly  encouraged!
This highly-acclaimed documentary is a must see for anyone who would like to know the truth about what the Bible and established science really have to say about homosexuality.  The recipient of 9 film festival awards, For the Bible Tells Me So directly addresses Bible passages that have been used to condemn homosexuality.  The film features prominent religious scholars, including Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu, and the compelling stories of typical American Christian families that initially struggled with a child coming out, and then came to accept and embrace their child’s sexual orientation.  The families of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Gene Robinson are among those whose stories are told in the film.  This moving film “boldly takes on a loaded topic and examines it both intellectually and emotionally; the result may well have you blinking away a few tears.”  (Seattle Times)
This event is brought to you by DeFrank’s Soul Support program and representatives of Marriage Equality Silicon Valley,(MESV.) Time permitting, group discussion will occur after the movie. Information will be provided by MESV on what our local organizations are doing in the movement to secure the right to marry for same-sex couples.
*Next month: June 8th! Soul Support brings back our LGBT Buddha buddies from SGI-Silicon Valley. Join us for an introductory presentation on Nichiren Buddhism from Soka Gakkai International, (SGI.)
