Free day wheelchair accessible stroll at UC Botanical Gardens

— admin @ 12:45 pm

Thursday, June 4     Explore UC Botanical Gardens
Come and join me at 1:30 for the free day, June 4 (first Thursday of the month), at the wheelchair accessible UC Botanical Gardens on Centennial Dr., above the campus.  (Parking is just past the Gardens on the left and costs — coins).  I’ll wait inside the gate.
There are always amazing plants and animals, and there should be newts in the pond.  If it’s warm and we’re lucky — snakes.  We can also explore the international relatives of our native plants.  We can just enjoy looking at everything, or I could share what I know about the plants.
To make this accessible for those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivites and safer for everyone, please don’t wear scented products.  (Vitamin Express, in Berkeley, has some truly unscented sunscreen — many products labeled “unscented” aren’t.)
I will plan to have this be a monthly event for each first Thurday. The Gardens are gorgeous every day of the year, with something always blooming. When it is winter here, it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere and the plants know it.

Good Old-Fashioned House Party Benefit for the Dyke March!!! June 5th Oakland

— admin @ 9:15 am

Let’s have a good old-fashioned house party benefit for the dyke march!
Come to an adyke house party to raise money for the dyke march. Costs go up
more each year, and they need our help.

After the setback we all got today, we need our Dyke March more than ever!

Help raise money for the talent, the sound, the stage, the clean-up, the
accessibility for old and disabled dykes, the viewing stand at 16th & Dolores,
and that fabulous dyke march sound truck winding its way through the Mission.

Things are rolling along getting ready for this party to raise funds for the
Dyke March!

We will have wine, non-alcoholic beverages, cheese/crackers, and other snacks provided.
Oakland location.

Friday June 5th
7:30 PM to 10:30 PM
Oakland location
suggested donation $20

rsvp to Xequina at:

xequina@hotmail. com

The party is accessible, just let us know if you have accessibility issues so
we can provide you with the correct information.

Please help us keep adyke events scent free to support adykes with chemical
sensitivity.

We still need volunteers to put the whip cream and cherry on this party! The usual
cast of characters with a volunteer coordinator at the top of the list! Email
us right away if you can help us to help the DYKE MARCH, the largest Dyke March
in the world!!

We still could use a tarot reader ;-)
Xequina and adyke have some very special plans for this party! We will have a
room for dancing, live entertainment, fortune tellers, various areas for various
moods….!!!!!!!!!

We need donations for the party as well. Wines, food, things to be
raffled…. Give it up for the Dyke March! You know it will make you feel good!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE DYKE MARCH!!!

Karen Soo Hoo/Pat Wilder June 14th in Oakland at Back Porch Concerts

— admin @ 9:15 am

Back Porch Concerts is thrilled to announce our Sunday June 14th Show featuring a double bill of Karen Soo Hoo and Pat Wilder.
There has been a change in the line-up because Magdalen Hsu-Li dropped out. But we are very excited to announce that Pat Wilder has agreed to perform soul, blues, and R&B in her place.
The show will begin with a set by Karen Soo Hoo. She hails from El Paso in the Lone Star State, Karen writes and sings original music that has often been described as a “mosaic of sound.” Karen serves up a tasty blend of jazzy/pop to bluesy/rock. Among her previous performances, she has served as opener for established acts such as: Chris Isaak, Joan Jett, Taylor Dayne, comics Margaret Cho & Kathy Griffin, the rock group “Train” and jazz prodigy Taylor Eigsti. Her music has been heard throughout various media outlets: KGO NewsTalk 810 am radio, KZSC & KUOP college radio, SF Pride & various PBS television programs. In addition to being a solo performer, Karen is also lead singer with “The Brunos Band.” She has also been playing the drums with the Karen Mullally Band - maybe you’ve had a chance to catch her recently at The Space in Oakland. Visit her websites to hear samples and learn more: http://www.brunosba nd.com/ http://www.myspace. com/brunosband, http://www.soohoomu sic.com
Pat Wilder has been described as “one of the most exciting blues guitarist/vocalists to come out of the bay area in a long time” by Lee Hildebrand of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Wilder has shared her talent with many great musicians, such as Linda Tillery, John Lee Hooker, Jr., Angela Bofill and many others. When performing, it is Wilder’s ambition to feel the electricity and energy exchanged between herself and the audience. Dorothy L. Hill of Blues Art Journal writes “As a vocalist, she holds the attention of the audience with fire and passion as she seamlessly shifts from raunchy to a girlishly sweet delivery. The combination is unbeatable.” When you hear it you too will be energized and completely captivated by the unique funk rhythms of her CDs, “Eugene” and “Lay Down Daddy”. Check her out at http://www.patwilde rlive.com
For those of you who have not been here before, Back Porch Concerts is a series of “house concerts” held in a backyard in Oakland, featuring queer musicians. Because this is a “private event” we don’t publicize the address but will send you the address and directions about a week before the event. The event is open to everyone so please feel free to pass this along or bring your friends . . . but please make a reservation. You can make reservations by emailing us at backporchconcerts@ gmail.com or calling 510 533-4732. We ask for a donation of $20-8 for the musicians. Approximately 95% of the money goes to the musicians. We know times are tough for a lot of us but we can’t forget our musician friends. Please call regarding accessibility. Bring chairs to sit on, a picnic and drinks. The shows start at 2PM, and the “doors” open at 1:30. Looking forward to seeing you all.
We now have a myspace page. Check it out at http://www.myspace. com/backporchconcerts. And if anyone can teach us how to make it better we’d appreciate it!!
