Housemate wanted for queer-friendly, fab Dolores Park flat

— admin @ 1:45 pm

Hi Everyone,
I’m seeking a housemate to join me in a lovely 2 bedroom/1 bath flat. $998/month. An ideal match would be neat, clean, responsible, queer or queer friendly, fun and sociable, good communicator, non-smoker/ drugger, late 20s and up, employed, no pets (sadly, landlord’s rule). Available 10/1.
This is a great flat in a truly wonderful location, 1/2 block up the hill from Dolores Park and the J line. 7-minute walk to Castro Street and Valencia/The Mission. Upper flat of a fourplex, hardwood floors in living room, large kitchen, back porch you where you can dine while overlooking the landscaped, humongous back yard (you can garden there, too!).
Flat is medium-sized–not spacious, not tiny. Kitchen has new, nice- looking cabinetry, dishwasher and newish appliances (gas stove). Piano in living room. Swanky mid-century with-a-twist decorating scheme (gold mermaid coffee table–can you dig it). Laundry in building. Drink in the view of the city from the living room window seat while having morning coffee. Parking is very good (amazing but true). Don

Hi, I’m a queer/lesbian PhD student in my early 30’s looking for a warm, positive place to live. Ideally I’d like to find an opening in mid-September, though I have some flexibility. I commute to the South Bay 2/3 times per week and often write or read at home. I’m friendly, have traveled substantially internationally and can hold up my end of a conversation. I’m organized, but not excessively so. I’d love a place with several queer housemates and pets. (I don’t have one, but I love them). I’m financially stable and easy to get along with. I love to cook and like to eat with others once a week or so, or when it fits. A variety of housing situations could work out well. Thanks, please let me know if you have a room for rent or a suggestion. Best, V.

Acknowledging Our Allies Gifts of Time & Money Crucial As we work towards rebuilding our Center, we want to acknowledge some of the folks who have been an integral part of our efforts. This is not meant to be an all-inclusive list - we’d like to feature a few folks from time to time, so that everyone gets their proper due. This week, we’re going to focus on a few: One of the most valuable allies the Center has had for years is Arlene Rusche. As a member of the Senior Vintage Program Advisory Council, she’s worked tirelessly to promote, encourage, oversee and help out in many, many other ways to ensure that our Vintage Program serves all who need and use it. She’s attended countless meetings, arranged to help and recruited others to help for events, and spoken on behalf of the Program and the Center wherever she goes. In addition, she’s donated thousands of dollars to the Center over the years. Her kindness and generosity have helped keep us going for a long time. The Center could not ask for a better ally, supporter and ambassador. Thank you, Arlene, for your years of service and devotion! On August 16th, Arlene, Clara Brock, Donna Clark, and Dotty Calabrese held a fundraising dessert party, with coffee donated by Crema Coffee next door to the Center, , in Mountain View for the De Frank Center. Over 55 people attended from the LGBT and PFLAG communities, as well as many supportive neighbors and co-workers. Previously, many who attended had never heard of the De Frank Center, and were pleased to learn of its existence and programs. At this time, this event has raised over $6000, including two $1000 matches from party invitees. And donations continue. The party also spawned three other dessert parties to be held soon. The four hosts are shocked and thrilled at the generosity of guests and friends. Thank you community and keep up the good work. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! Know of anyone you’d like to see acknowledged in future eblasts? Contact Paul Wysocki at (408) 293-3040 X103, or email paul@defrank.org _____

Fundraising Updates Save Our Center Night- Seven Spots, One Point The Billy DeFrank Center was the center of attention at a variety of locations on Saturday August 22nd - supporters and allies were invited to dine, dance, drink and or enjoy a classical concert to increase awareness of the center’s situation and promote ongoing donations to maintain the programs and staffing at the center. We raised over $2,200 from the event, and we hear there’s more coming. Much thanks go out to our supporters - Habana Cuba, The Naglee Park Garage, Pasta Pomodoro, The First Unitarian Church, Brix Nightclub, and Renegades Bar. 1000 @ 20 Since we launched the “1000 @ $20/month” campaign last month, we’ve received a total over $52,000. it’s an amazing outpouring of support from the community and has become one of our most successful campaigns ever. The work isn’t done though, we have a great distance to cover in a short time. In addition, we posted a $10,000 challenge from San Jose’s Vice Mayor, Judy Chirco, and within 11 days we raised almost $12,000. That means, due to your support, we’ll receive an additional $10,000!! _____
Make A Difference: Become A Board Member Applications Due By August 31 Your community center is looking for a few good people — new board members who will play a major role in our renewal! We’re writing to a special group of people who might themselves, or know someone else, who might be interested in serving on the Board of Directors for the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center. … Read More _____
General News Our next Board of Directors meeting is the Annual Membership Meeting to be held on Tuesday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m.; meetings are held in the Grand Ballroom of the Center at 938 The Alameda, San Jose. New Board members will be elected at the upcoming meeting (see above). Ballots will be sent out in September, in our newsletter as well as posted on our web site. At last night’s Board Meeting, two new members were appointed to previously vacant positions: * Steve Lynch, who is a relative newcomer to the Center. He came to his first Board meeting in March and was inspired to get involved immediately. After months of serving on the Fundraising Committee, he decided he wanted to increase his participation, and offer his services as a member of the Board. * Clay Wilson, a longtime member of the Senior Vintage Advisory Council and beloved member of the DeFrank family, also decided he wanted to take on larger role as a Board member. Congratulations to both Steve and Clay, and thank you for stepping forward! _____
My Support Group: When we migrated our web site to a new location recently, we unfortunately lost a great deal of content from the old site (you may have noticed!). In particular, we need to repost information about each of the groups that meet here regularly (see list of meeting below). We’ll be trying to get out to visit each of the groups soon, but why wait? Send Paul an email to paul@defrank.org and we’ll get you and yours updated. Thank you for continuing to gather here, and thank you for your patience as we re”vamp” ourselves! _____
Hey, where’s my membership? Many of our supporters have wished to donate through membership in the Center. Due to the immediacy of our funding crisis, our current fundraising takes the form of a donor drive; later, when we have some time and breathing room, we’ll be initiating an improved membership program, which will include all of these donors as members, with new category levels and enhanced benefits. Help move us toward stability and renewal: log on to www.defrank.org and click “donations.” You’ve got the option of making a one-time gift, or a very welcome monthly contribution. If you’d rather send us a check, please let us know if you’re joining our monthly support campaign by writing “monthly donation” on your check and mailing it to: Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center, 938 The Alameda, San Jose CA 95126. Our most sincere thanks for choosing not to lose DeFrank! _____

Buy a house in the country!

— admin @ 12:45 pm

Hi. I am new to the list and want to introduce myself, Gwen Hardage-Vergeer, and my partner Lani Hardage-Vergeer. We are an occupational therapist/speech therapist and technical writer, respectively, and we have six children (two grown, four young ones at home).
Lani and I are selling our home. We moved up to Mendocino County 7 years ago to get away from the city/traffic and give our children a chance to run around on five beautiful acres. Our road is nicknamed “Lezzy Lane” because most of the homes are owned by dykes (older dykes), and there is quite a community here. Now we are moving and would like to put out into the world that this is a great place to live. Laytonville is 3 hours north of the Bay Area on highway 101. It is a very sustainability-oriented, open-minded, energy-conscious town. Our home is 3+ bedroom, separate office, garden and fruit trees, architect-designed for us, solar panels with tie-in to PG&E, play-structures in yard. We also have a large mobile home that has a guest bedroom and studio in it. Although we do not have a ramp up to the house, much of the indoors is accessible (e.g. low cabinets, large shower with no threshold). We have a 2-stall barn and a large grazing area. We are pricing our house to sell at $435,000; you can see it on the MLS at > http://movetomendo.idxco.com/idx/2447/details.php?idxID=047&listingID=20922370 > > The reason we are selling is that one of our children has special needs that have become too great to be handled in our small school. However, we love it here and are only moving a little way south in the county, close to Ukiah.
Thank you for any interest you may have! Gwen >

North Bay Adventuristas!!! Anyone up for a day of great Jazz and/or Blues at Johnsons Beach in Guerneville? This year they’ve combined the events-Jazz on Saturday with Al Jarreau, Rick Braun amoung others. The Sunday Blues lineup has a very New Orleans flavor with the Neville Brothers and Dr. John plus local guy Tommy Castro. Alas, no Etta James this year. The Tickets are $45/day but you can kayak to the site and listen for free if you like. Otherwise its a bring a beach chair and a cooler kind of event and the weather in September at the river is beautiful. We can meet up and sit together either day, I know I will be there Sunday for sure. It should be fun.
Next month? I need ideas for an event. Anyone into party boat fishing? Womens colege basketball, Or hosting a wine tasting event? Dancing at the Barge in Sausalito?
Holla back y’all
Kip
