Rally supports women’s health/denounces Stupak-Pitts. TOMORROW Dec 2. Noon. SF City Hall
I’m helping with the PR for this rally TOMORROW Wed Dec 2 @ Noon on the Polk St steps of SF’s City Hall — in support of women’s health and denouncing the Stupak-Pitts Amendment.
If anyone’s interested in attending, here’s the info:
California Women, Physicians and Communities Urge Senators to Oppose Abortion Coverage Ban in Health Reform WHAT: Rally in Support of Women’s Health and Lives WHEN: Wednesday, December 2, 2009 @ 12:00pm WHERE: San Francisco City Hall, 1 Carlton B Goodlett Place. (Polk Street Steps) Reproductive health, rights, and justice advocates will gather in solidarity to denounce restrictive, discriminatory amendments like Stupak/Pitts and voice their support for comprehensive health care reform for all. The Stupak-Pitts Amendment, one of the most controversial issues in the country, adds language to the health care bill that would, if passed by the Senate, heavily restrict federal funding for abortion procedures and compromise women¹s health. According to the amendment, no government funds under the new health care plan could go toward the payment for an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, or when a mother¹s life is in danger. Those individuals who would receive a government subsidy for health care under the plan — any four-person family making $88,000 a year or less — would also be prohibited from buying an insurance plan that covers abortions. Women may not anticipate their need for abortion, but it remains vital medical care for one in three women and a basic human right for everyone. Speakers, in order of appearance (beginning at 12:15pm): *Belle Taylor-McGhee: President and CEO, Pacific Institute for Women¹s Health *Dennis Herrera: San Francisco City Attorney *Dr. Norma Jo Waxman: University of California at San Francisco *Dr. Jen Kerns: University of California at San Francisco *Keely Monroe: Law Students for Reproductive Justice *Lupe Rodriguez: Program & Policy Director, ACCESS/Women’s Health Rights Coalition *Bevan Dufty: San Francisco Supervisor, District 8
