Personal Finance for LGBT Couples

— admin @ 5:30 pm

Personal Finance for LGBT Couples

Addressing financial issues can be difficult for any couple. For the LGBT community, the consequences of not talking about money issues and planning ahead can be devastating. While marriage and domestic partnerships provides a wonderful celebration of love and commitment, financial planning provides the means to carry out your desires as you (and not the government) see fit.

Come join us for a lively discussion of the latest and greatest opportunities to maximize your financial and life goals against the backdrop of uncertainties in taxes, estate planning, retirement plans, and marriage in California.

This free program is presented by Ralph G. Latza, Certified Financial Planner and former tax attorney.

Poster Contest!

— admin @ 6:45 am

From: WADSJ (World AIDS Day, San Jose) Event Committee
Every year, on December 1st the world comes together to commemorate World AIDS Day. As determined by the United Nations program on AIDS, the theme for 2008 continues to place the emphasis on Leadership: “Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise.”
On a local level, the WADSJ Event Committee is busy making preparations. We are pleased to announce our local World AIDS Day event will be held this year in the beautiful glass Rotunda at San Jose City Hall.
Also, for the first time, the committee is actively soliciting the engagement of community artists. In the spirit of creative unity and compassionate activism, we are calling all artists to participate in a poster design contest. The design parameters are wide open. For instance, you may submit a logo design to be incorporated into the poster. Or, you may create a full poster background. You may address this years leadership theme, or focus on World AIDS Day in general. You will not need to incorporate text at this stage of poster design. However, please be aware that your artwork will be used in conjunction with text, and may be later utilized in any number of promotional layouts,(brochure, postcards, etc.)
Other than the honor of having your artwork showcased on this years promotional material, the winner will also be awarded a brand new iPod! Naturally, the recipient will be allowed to choose his/her new iPod from an array of rainbow colors!
Submission DEADLINE: October 3rd! Please submit your design electronically, preferably in jpg format, to jolynnotto@yahoo.com For more information or further inquiries, please contact Jo-Lynn Otto at the above address.

SoulMates

— admin @ 2:15 pm

Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 7:00 - 9:00 PM Free
This month Soul Support explores “soulmate.”
What does it really mean? Do we have an innate desire to find a soulmate, and how do we find our “twin flame”? What are the underlying assumptions and expectations of a soulmate? And, what does current research have to say about all this, especially as it relates to a lasting and fulfilling relationship? Be prepared for surprise!
Soul Support coordinator, Jo-Lynn Otto, will provide a variety of handouts as food for thought. Join us for a topic that is sure to stimulate a lively discussion! Prerequisite: Bring an open and curious mind, and willingness to share your heart-inspired wisdom.
For further inquiries, please contact Jo-Lynn Otto at jolynnotto@yahoo.com. Or, you may phone the DeFrank Director of programming, Kevin Nguyen at 408-293-3040 (x112).

Hike Sunday Sept 14 - Bay Trail - Millbrae to San Mateo

— admin @ 10:00 pm

I’m leading a hike for the SF Hiking Club (www.sfhiking.com) that you’re welcome to come on:
September 14, Sunday: Bay Trail - Millbrae to San Mateo Leader: Peter McCluskey (650)967-3359 pcm@rahul.net. Meet at the trailhead at 10:15. Rating: Moderate, 10 miles, 200 feet elevation gain. This hike will mostly stay on paved bike paths that follow the shoreline. We will pass several hotels with cultivated flowers, several small parks, a yacht club, and a beach that often has windsurfers. Well behaved dogs are welcome. We will have a car shuttle from one end of the hike to a spot near the middle, so part of the hike will be out and back, part will be one-way. There will be several chances for people who don’t want to hike the full distance to skip parts of it. Directions to the trailhead: take 101 to the 3rd Avenue exit. Go east on 3rd Avenue for about one mile. Turn left into Seal Point Park (the first left after a stop light at Ryder Park), and park a short distance to the left of the entrance. Bring: Water, lunch, sunscreen, hat. Canceled in event of heavy rain.
