We are inviting all our “neighbors” especially newcomers - those who have been in the area for two years or less.
+Become a more intimate part of YOUR queer community! We will be having a short program where we discuss what our ideal women’s community looks like, in addition to social time (with refreshments and drinks) where we can connect with one another.
+Start volunteering! (if you so desire)
Center Women Present is comprised entirely of volunteers, so also come along if you would like to get more information about volunteering at our events or being a part of our steering committee. No commitments necessary!
What a way to start 2009!
We look forward to seeing you there!
We kindly ask for a $5-15 donation for our events, but no one is turned away for lack of funds!

GLBT Square Dance Class Starts Tuesday January 20

— admin @ 9:30 pm

It’s fun, it’s cheap and you’re invited! The class begins on Tuesday Jan. 20th. We dance from 7 to 9 pm at the First Congregational Church, 1229 Court Street in Martinez.
Gay and lesbian square dancing is not the American folk-dancing you might have learned and remember from grade school. It is more upbeat, energetic and a lot of fun to learn. We offer square dancing opportunities for everyone, from the absolute beginner to those more advanced. All you really need is a sense of fun and a desire to meet and interact with new people! Traditional square dance attire is not required, if it’s street legal, you can dance in it and you are likely to dance to a wide variety of music. Also, you don’t have to bring a partner - there are always people you can find to dance with. And we just don’t stop with square dancing - we also plan other social events such as potlucks, pool parties and movie nights.
The new beginner class will be a commitment of about 30 weeks to reach the Plus level of square dancing. Cost for the entire class is $140, which includes instruction, space rental and class materials. Students can also pay three installments of $50 each. No prior dance experience or special talent is required - it’s relatively easy and lots of fun.
In addition to classes, we offer club nights and most clubs host square dances. Club nights are informal dances open to all members of the club and visitors for an evening of dancing. More structured square dances are events where other clubs and visitors are encouraged to attend, making for a regional dance experience. A typical square dance brings in a guest square dance caller (the person that “calls” or announces the square dance steps) and some 50 to 100 dancers (6 to 12 “squares”) for an evening of dancing at a variety of dance levels. Our dances give you a chance to show off dancing skills you learned during class, and also provide an opportunity to socialize with square dancers from other clubs.
Check out our website for more information, it’s www.diablo-dancers.org and respond to this ad if you have questions.

Marin Life Presidential Inauguration Breakfast

— admin @ 12:30 am

Can you remember your elementary school class marching down to the auditorium to watch John Glenn blast off for the first orbit around the Earth? Maybe it was the King speech at the `63 March on Washington or possibly JFK’s funeral when your family gathered around their tiny TV. But if you are of a certain age, you remember that the entire Nation paused for these historic events. There is something about being in community with other like minded people as you witness a life altering, once in a lifetime historical event that heightens the moment.
Join your community at Marin AIDS Project as we witness and celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama on January 20, 2009 at 8:30 AM. We will serve breakfast at our location at 910 Irwin Street in San Rafael and project the inauguration upon our wall. It will be a moment in time remembered forever. RSVP to Andy at 415-457-2487×102.

Lives in Transition - January 15

— admin @ 8:45 am

Date:

Thursday January 15, 2009
Time:

5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Location:

GLBT Historical Society 657 Mission Street. #300 San Francisco, CA 94105
Notes:

January 15 - Exhibit opening 5:30pm talk by historian Susan Stryker. 7:00pm Opening reception.
The face of San Francisco is changing, and so are its stories. This is seen most dramatically in the Polk Gulch district. The exhibit focuses on the history of the Polk, from the 1980s to the present, by presenting stories from people in the middle of current changes in the area. We ask: what does it mean to the identity of San Francisco (or the identity of the LGBT movement?) that the Polk is changing so dramatically?
Since the late 1970s, the low-income Polk Gulch district has been a national destination and home for some of the most underrepresented segments of the LGBT community. These include runaway and homeless youth, often fleeing abusive or unwelcome homes; immigrants, primarily from Asia and Latin America; working class and poor transgendered women; the homeless; and seniors.
In the past five years, citywide building boom, escalating land values, and skyrocketing rents in the central city have pushed and pulled middle-income small businesses, clubs, and residents to the area. At the same time, the scores of gay bars that formed the backbone of the Polk community have all but closed. Tension, bitterness, and misunderstandings have emerged as a result of this transition, with new neighborhood and business associations, the homeless, the few remaining gay and transgender bars, and social service organizations competing for prized territory in the urban landscape.
