Intro. to Modern Buddhism

— admin @ 12:45 pm

Introduction to Modern Buddhism
Time: June 8, 2009 @ 7:00-8:30 pm
Soul Support brings back one of our most popular programs, Soka Gakkai International: The Buddhist Association for Peace, Culture & Education. Our LGBT Buddhist friends (SGI) will introduce the basic teachings and practice of Nichiren Buddhism. SGI maintains we all possess the capacity to discover our innate Buddahood. We can dispel delusion about the limits of our happiness, and discover our inherent strength, wisdom and compassion. Through studying Buddhist philosophy and taking action daily for the well-being of others, we can establish a state of absolute happiness in which we make each moment of our lives joyful and meaningful. In the process, we become instruments for peace in our families, community, and the world.
Location: Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center, 938 The Alameda, San Jose
Cost: Soul Support is a volunteer driven, free service to the community. However, donations are gladly accepted in support the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center.
For further inquiries, and to RSVP, please contact program coordinator, Jnana Otto at jolynnotto@yahoo.com

Volunteer for the Day of Decision - Tonight in San Jose

— admin @ 7:45 am

May 2008
We are the ones we have been waiting for. This is the day we have been waiting for.
Dear Friends:
As we nervously await the outcome of the California Supreme Court decision on May 26th, please consider volunteering to help MESV with the march and rally.
Sincerely, Gloria Nieto
Day of Decision

Volunteer
. Be a march monitor. Walk with your friends, your community, your neighbors, and wear a vest while making sure that everyone gets to City Hall safely together. . Collect emails at City Hall. We have the clipboards, pens and forms, you walk around and get emails so that we can keep telling our community what is coming next. . Carry big signs. We have some really big, beautiful signs that need to be carried at the front of the march and held on the stage at the rally. They have poles on them so we need at least two people at a time to carry them. There can be sign teams if you want to carry a sign with your husband/wife, friend, etc. . Carry your own rainbow flags. . Make signs now to bring to the march.
Please email me if you can volunteer. glorianieto@comcast.net

Decision on Prop. 8 Will be announced on Tuesday, May 26 by the California Supreme Court ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(San Jose, Ca - May 22) - The California Supreme Court has announced that it will rule Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at 10 am, on whether Proposition 8, passed by a slim majority of voters on November 4 and eliminating the right of same-sex couples to marry, was a valid amendment to the California Constitution. . oakland [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102588979456&s=8115&e=001K_Rv9k8fBBNV_er5rqI6_JmMfEccpKqFi1lbzt2h6e1yiqTBtfvMBNBvt5ridZ7s8C87H0FJKLZTyn4ini9JEOYAvrqhvKyDHb8lKwz5LdLOti41UY8gpA==] The court will rule on these questions before the judges. 1. Is Proposition 8 invalid because it constitutes a revision of, rather than an amendment to, the California Constitution? 2. Does Proposition 8 violate the separation of powers doctrine under the California Constitution? 3. If Proposition 8 is not unconstitutional, what is its effect, if any, on the marriages of same-sex couples performed before the adoption of Proposition 8? OutNow Magazine will send out a e-blast within minutes after the court makes its announcement on Tuesday. We will then follow-up with coverage on the topic that will be posted to our website in the marriage equality section. Speaker John Laird Even has Been Canceled at DeFrank Tonight For This Reason

— admin @ 9:15 pm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
John Laird Rescheduled ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
San Jose, CA - May 21 - Due to the community’s preparation for the court to announce its decision on Proposition 8, the John Laird speaker event at the Billy DeFrank Center has been rescheduled to June 25.
The California Supreme Court is expected to reveal its decision on whether or not the gay community should have marriage equality. The announcement is expected next Tuesday, Thursday or the latest on June 1. Whatever the decision, the GLBT and supporting community plans a course of action for either celebration or rally for our rights. And leadership in the community will be meeting tonight to iron out the logistics for action. When decisions are made, OutNow will inform you about what is planned. You can follow up-to-date information about Proposition 8 on a few websites including “OutNowMagazine.com, “DayOfDecision.com,” “NCLrights.org,” and the “CourageCampaign.com.” We will remind you about Laird’s speaking engagement on June 25th at the Billy DeFrank Center. As we celebrate Pride next month, Laird can tell fasinating stories about our journey toward equality. OutNow - Keeping You Informed
