Acknowledging Our Allies Gifts of Time & Money Crucial As we work towards rebuilding our Center, we want to acknowledge some of the folks who have been an integral part of our efforts. This is not meant to be an all-inclusive list - we’d like to feature a few folks from time to time, so that everyone gets their proper due. This week, we’re going to focus on a few: One of the most valuable allies the Center has had for years is Arlene Rusche. As a member of the Senior Vintage Program Advisory Council, she’s worked tirelessly to promote, encourage, oversee and help out in many, many other ways to ensure that our Vintage Program serves all who need and use it. She’s attended countless meetings, arranged to help and recruited others to help for events, and spoken on behalf of the Program and the Center wherever she goes. In addition, she’s donated thousands of dollars to the Center over the years. Her kindness and generosity have helped keep us going for a long time. The Center could not ask for a better ally, supporter and ambassador. Thank you, Arlene, for your years of service and devotion! On August 16th, Arlene, Clara Brock, Donna Clark, and Dotty Calabrese held a fundraising dessert party, with coffee donated by Crema Coffee next door to the Center, , in Mountain View for the De Frank Center. Over 55 people attended from the LGBT and PFLAG communities, as well as many supportive neighbors and co-workers. Previously, many who attended had never heard of the De Frank Center, and were pleased to learn of its existence and programs. At this time, this event has raised over $6000, including two $1000 matches from party invitees. And donations continue. The party also spawned three other dessert parties to be held soon. The four hosts are shocked and thrilled at the generosity of guests and friends. Thank you community and keep up the good work. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! Know of anyone you’d like to see acknowledged in future eblasts? Contact Paul Wysocki at (408) 293-3040 X103, or email paul@defrank.org _____

Fundraising Updates Save Our Center Night- Seven Spots, One Point The Billy DeFrank Center was the center of attention at a variety of locations on Saturday August 22nd - supporters and allies were invited to dine, dance, drink and or enjoy a classical concert to increase awareness of the center’s situation and promote ongoing donations to maintain the programs and staffing at the center. We raised over $2,200 from the event, and we hear there’s more coming. Much thanks go out to our supporters - Habana Cuba, The Naglee Park Garage, Pasta Pomodoro, The First Unitarian Church, Brix Nightclub, and Renegades Bar. Habana Cuba Naglee Park Garage Brix Renegades Bar Pasta Pomodoro _____
1000 @ 20 Since we launched the “1000 @ $20/month” campaign last month, we’ve received a total over $52,000. it’s an amazing outpouring of support from the community and has become one of our most successful campaigns ever. The work isn’t done though, we have a great distance to cover in a short time. In addition, we posted a $10,000 challenge from San Jose’s Vice Mayor, Judy Chirco, and within 11 days we raised almost $12,000. That means, due to your support, we’ll receive an additional $10,000!! _____
Make A Difference: Become A Board Member Applications Due By August 31 Your community center is looking for a few good people — new board members who will play a major role in our renewal! We’re writing to a special group of people who might themselves, or know someone else, who might be interested in serving on the Board of Directors for the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center. … Read More _____
General News Our next Board of Directors meeting is the Annual Membership Meeting to be held on Tuesday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m.; meetings are held in the Grand Ballroom of the Center at 938 The Alameda, San Jose. New Board members will be elected at the upcoming meeting (see above). Ballots will be sent out in September, in our newsletter as well as posted on our web site. At last night’s Board Meeting, two new members were appointed to previously vacant positions: * Steve Lynch, who is a relative newcomer to the Center. He came to his first Board meeting in March and was inspired to get involved immediately. After months of serving on the Fundraising Committee, he decided he wanted to increase his participation, and offer his services as a member of the Board. * Clay Wilson, a longtime member of the Senior Vintage Advisory Council and beloved member of the DeFrank family, also decided he wanted to take on larger role as a Board member. Congratulations to both Steve and Clay, and thank you for stepping forward! _____
My Support Group: When we migrated our web site to a new location recently, we unfortunately lost a great deal of content from the old site (you may have noticed!). In particular, we need to repost information about each of the groups that meet here regularly (see list of meeting below). We’ll be trying to get out to visit each of the groups soon, but why wait? Send Paul an email to paul@defrank.org and we’ll get you and yours updated. Thank you for continuing to gather here, and thank you for your patience as we re”vamp” ourselves! _____
Hey, where’s my membership? Many of our supporters have wished to donate through membership in the Center. Due to the immediacy of our funding crisis, our current fundraising takes the form of a donor drive; later, when we have some time and breathing room, we’ll be initiating an improved membership program, which will include all of these donors as members, with new category levels and enhanced benefits. Help move us toward stability and renewal: log on to www.defrank.org and click “donations.” You’ve got the option of making a one-time gift, or a very welcome monthly contribution. If you’d rather send us a check, please let us know if you’re joining our monthly support campaign by writing “monthly donation” on your check and mailing it to: Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center, 938 The Alameda, San Jose CA 95126. Our most sincere thanks for choosing not to lose DeFrank! _____

Announcing Auditions for the Silicon Valley Gay Men’s Chorus!

— admin @ 7:00 am

Auditions for new (and previous but not current) members will be held on Tuesday, August 25th from 5pm until 9pm at La Petit Trianon, 72 N 5th St, San Jose.  Auditionees will be notified in the very near future regarding your choice of a 15 minute timeslot during that time.  I’ve been working very hard to develop an audition process that is friendly and not stressful.  I know a process like this can be nerve racking and intimidating, and I want to you know that I will do everything I can to eliminate that and make the process more enjoyable.  These are closed auditions, meaning you will be singing only for me and no one else.  The audition will consist of three parts.
1) A song of your choice:  Please prepare a song for you to sing.  It can be anything: pop, Broadway, folksong, and opera, whatever.  There are only two restrictions; you should sing a song that you really enjoy singing, and you must sing it accapella, meaning without any sort of accompaniment.
2) One on one vocalization:  I will take you through some simple singing exercises to determine your singing range, the tone of your singing voice, and how well you match pitches and rhythms.  You do not need to prepare anything for this; I will walk you through everything that you need to know when we get to that point.
3)One on one interview:  I want to take a few minutes to get to know you, both as a person and a singer/musician.  I want to make this as informal as possible, so that you can relax and we can get to know each other a little more.  When you are contacted to schedule an audition time, you will also receive a short information sheet for you to complete and bring along to make this part of the process easier.
That’s all there is to it.  I want to make sure that you understand that this is NOT a competitive process, meaning there are not a set number of positions in the chorus available before the auditions, and the size of the group will be determined by the number of people who are a good fit with the organization.  I am looking for people who will be a good match for the chorus, both musically and as a person.  I really want you to be comfortable in the audition and let me know who you are.  Also, keep in mind that previous experience is not required; only a desire to be a part of the team, a willingness to give your best effort and a need to have fun.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please email me as soon as possible.  I will get back to you as soon as I possibly can.  Also, if you know of anyone that would be interested in auditioning, please pass this along to them and have them get in touch with me as soon as possible. Until the 25th, I wish you the very best of luck, and I look forward to meeting you in person.
