On Oct. 12, he died from his wounds. Almost overnight Matthew became a symbol of the extreme abuse gay people suffer in America. A group of play writers went to Laramie to interview residents about the murder. Their notes were used to write the hit play, “The Laramie Project.” Over the years the play has been produced hundreds of times in small towns and big cities, educating the audience about what many gays experience on a daily basis. Last year the same team of play writers went back to Laramie to see how much had changed since Matthew’s murder. The play authors have updated the script, calling it “The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later.” The revised play will be performed at the Berkeley Rep on Oct. 12 along with hundreds of other theaters across the country. Financial problems started late last year and kept escalating with every passing month. Staff was laid off, hours cut back, programs eliminated. In September, the board approved a reorganization that will hopefully buy some time while a study is conducted to see if the San Jose gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community is willing to support a center. There are many serious questions that need to be answered. The community center isn’t out of danger yet. A fundraising campaign is ongoing and other changes are expected during the next six months. Young & The Restless: The Living Dead Happens to be Gay james [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102715418854&s=8115&e=001wsQOYlDdo-GXme1NMU0XRaQWAUnse-f6C22u-i0NLbMH45J4r3ZWHR_tshSakqjGqZU0DSuZU9EEw0miU0Q9VIPX3JYxfRQn94sjAFuQ1A5_8wsBXmWJTQ==] Thom Bierdz, who lives in the Bay Area, was a man all the women wanted on the Young & The Restless. But tragedy killed the heart throb, and in real life the handsome man is actually gay. But in the world of daytime soaps, death isn’t always long-term. People come back to life all the time, claiming to have faked the entire death. When producers wanted Thom to return to the show, he was interested in the offer. But only if his character comes out as gay. The law encourages schools to discuss and observe Harvey Milk’s contributions to the state. This is not mandatory. The governor vetoed the same bill last year, claiming Milk was not a notable figure outside of San Francisco and should be honored on a local level. Since that last veto, the hit movie Milk was released, making the murdered leader a well known advocate for gay rights. Equality California delivered more than 39,000 signatures to the governor’s office requesting that he sign the bill into law. At the same time, the office is getting thousands of calls from anti-gay rights people demanding Schwarzenegger veto the bill. If he does nothing, the bill automatically becomes law. Stronger Together Troy [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102715418854&s=8115&e=001wsQOYlDdo-GXme1NMU0XRaQWAUnse-f6C22u-i0NLbMH45J4r3ZWHR_tshSakqjGqZU0DSuZU9EEw0miU0Q9VIPX3JYxfRQn94sjAFuQ1A5_8wsBXmWJTQ==] My column this month exposes the overwhelming amount of homophobia our sales staff encounters when calling local small businesses to sale advertising. We are in one of the most “gay friendly” regions in the country, yet we hear things like “we’re not interested in those people,” or “we don’t want gays here.” Others don’t bother to say anything. Soon as we say the magazine targets the gay community, they just hang-up. Keep in mind, the owner of the restaurant where you ate last weekend, or the guy who painted your house or dentist who cleaned your teeth could have a bigoted attitude. As gay friendly laws are passed and employers offer domestic partner benefits, it left us with a false sense of security and acceptance. In 2007, Santa Clara County reported that 56 percent of all hate crimes were against gay people. We still have a lot of work to do as a community, but our support for one another is in peril. If we don’t stand together, we could lose what we’ve gained. Read more on page 4 of the current issue. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
